We aim to follow the Government's Environment and Greener Living policy frameworks for recycling and waste management.
Whilst conforming to all existing environmental regulations, laws and codes of practice, we regard these as setting the minimum standards of performance and will strive to do more.
Aslan is committed to minimising the impact of its operations on the environment by means of a program of continuous improvement.
Where ever possible, offer our clients assistance with making their projects more sustainable by sourcing and incorporating eco-friendly products in our design.
Aslan has only a very small office presence and our office operations are managed to minimise environmental impact where possible. Energy consumption and the use of consumables are monitored. We aim to minimise pollution and waste and to recycle wherever possible.
As part of our annual business review processes, our office operations are also reviewed so that we can continuously improve our environmental performance.
We believe that creating and maintaining a sustainable company will have a positive influence. Over the past 2 decades, we have actively pursued waste reduction and recycling.
Reduce energy use through by minimising studio equipment and lighting
Reduce energy use of electrical applications, computers, monitors, office equipment and lighting by turning off if anticipated non-use is more than 5 minutes, where practicable
Recycle all studio equipment, waste, lighting
Reduce our use of products not absolutely necessary including plastics and other non-renewable
Avoid unnecessary use of hazardous materials and products, seeking substitutions when feasible, and taking all reasonable steps to protect human health and the environment when such materials must be used, stored and disposed of
Consign waste for re-use where practicable
Use low carbon and organic products and services including cleaning products, buying bulk supplies to reduce packaging and transport emissions
Travel by public transport wherever practicable, thus minimising the need for use of transport facilities.
Supply full and thorough information on our environmental policy to any interested parties
Integrate environmental concerns in our day to day decision making
Actively seek to make improvements in our environmental control
Require where applicable all of our paper suppliers to certify that paper/timber is from sustainable forest not from rain forest where practicable
Encourage our suppliers to implement environmentally sound policies and show preference to those suppliers so doing
At present we use electricity purchased from renewal sources (25%). As of mid August our studio will operate with the following:
Install 1.5 gigabyte Solar power system aiming to produce 50% to 100% studio electricity usage. This figure varies according to power generated due to seasonal fluctuations and office usage.
Electricity generated and not used goes into grid thus supplying green power to grid
Any electricity purchased comes from green power (100% renewal sources)
We offer 3 types of printing
1. Standard printing with carbon offsets - standard printing with carbon offsets at no charge*
2. Bulk priced printing with the option to purchase carbon offsets
standard paper stocks
100% recycled stock is made from 100% post consumer waste and is uncoated
3. Specialty printing with carbon offsets - specialty finishes with the option to purchase carbon offsets
Fully offset means the entire life cycle - from the emissions made by producing and transporting the raw materials, to the printing process itself, to the eventual recycling or disposal of the product at the end of its life. See below for explanation of Scopes 1, 2 and 3
Measure and neutralise the carbon emissions from your print job, throughout the entire supply chain
Sourcing paper from responsibly managed forests (FSC and PEFC certified)
Use suppliers who hold ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification
Scope 1 carbon emissions are "direct emissions" in that they come from plant and equipment and processes that are directly owned or controlled by the business itself. They may occur as part of the everyday running of the business. These emissions may be:
from combustion for on-site heating or cooling
emissions from food preparation and cooking, e.g. gas stoves or ovens
combustion for back-up power generation (e.g. a diesel powered generator or UPS)
emissions from fuel for company owned vehicles
refrigerant gases (called fugitive emissions)
fire extinguishers etc.
Scope 2 carbon emissions are "indirect emissions" and are typically from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by the business.
Scope 3 carbon emissions are additional indirect emissions that are outside of the business control and indirectly contribute to the running of the business. These emissions look broader into the actions and processes that are required for a business to function, but would otherwise be invisible. For example, emissions from:
waste, waste removal and transportation
the extraction and production of purchased materials, e.g. recycled paper production, forestry and wood pulp production, paper manufacturing, emissions from soy-based ink manufacture
employee travel to and from work
hire cars, taxis, air and rail travel for business purposes
accommodation for business purposes, e.g. in hotels
transportation of materials to the business, e.g. paper deliveries
deliveries to the business by road, rail and air
the storage of materials or finished goods
transportation of finished goods from the business
outsourced activities
Unless all scopes are covered you cannot achieve "true" Carbon neutrality.
At present we are formulating a carbon offset strategy for our internet services including data centre carbon offsets.
